Navi Mumbai: To curb rash driving and road accident cases, January 3 &mdash; 17 was declared as Road Safety Week. The Regional Transport Office (RTO), Navi Mumbai, took the efforts to conduct sessions highlighting the importance of following safety rules during this week.

The RTO office arranged for a series of lectures pertaining to road safety on January 10. These sessions were specifically held for all motor training schools and instructors in the satellite city. Around 120 vehicle owners, trainees and instructors attended the event.
Assistant Regional Transport Officer, Pune, Yogesh Bauge, presented these sessions and stressed on essential elements drivers ought to know before they take control of the wheel.
Bauge has also authored books on road safety &mdash; Apghaat aani aapan (Accidents and us) and Learners Manual and made several references to the contents of his works.
This included proper driving attitude and habits, which training schools must instill in their students. Many drivers are unaware about road safety rules, which is the main cause of accidents. Bauge mentioned that breaking the rules only shows callousness and indifference towards fellow motorists.

He emphasised that driving in the wrong direction, breaking signals and cutting lanes should be avoided as it could cause major accidents.
Basic steps of how to deal in emergency situations like tire punctures and brake failure were also demonstrated at the lectures.
Deputy RTO officer Sanjay Daygude, Vashi said, &ldquo;Road safety is very important, so we conducted these lectures to ensure road safety rules are understood and followed, which was our a main objective. This will encourage people to follow the rules so that no lives are lost or injuries are caused on account of accidents.&rdquo;
Bauge added, &ldquo;Every driver knows how to drive, but it is important to let him or her know that human safety comes first and they should not deliberately break the rules. Unless motor training school instructors do not correct the driving attitudes of the learners, they cannot teach them driving.&rdquo;
The RTO also organised eye check up camps from January 3 - 8, for drivers of local transportation services in various nodes of Navi Mumbai. Making the campaign more contagious, road safety slogans were displayed on Navi Mumbai Municipal Transport (NMMT) buses.
