New Delhi: Amid repeated adjournments, tempers ran high in the Rajya Sabha, the upper house of the parliament, which saw clashes between Mayawati and HRD Minister Smriti Irani, who said she's ready to behead herself if Mayawati was not satisfied with her reply while asking her to allow a discussion on the issue.

To Mayawati's persistent demands, Irani said, "I am ready to reply to all questions. First you allow the discussion... If you want, I am ready to reply. If you are not satisfied with my reply, I am ready to behead myself and lay it on your feet." Before the house adjourned for the day, Mayawati dubbed the Vemula incident as an "insult to 25 crore Dalits" and asked for resignation of two union ministers over it. Trouble started as soon as the House met for the day with Mayawati speaking about the Vemula issue.
Mayawati, who wanted inclusion of a Dalit member in a committee that is probing Vemula's death, accused the government of trying to "neglect" his issue, while Irani said she was ready to reply to all questions. Later, amid sloganeering by BSP, Irani said the opposition was using a "dead child" (Rohith) as "a political tool and strategy."
Will punish anti-national activities: Naidu Parliamentary Affairs Minister Venkaiah Naidu asserted that the government will not tolerate anti-national activities and will punish those indulging in it. Speaking on the solidarity expressed with JNU students, who were allegedly shouting pro-Afzal Guru slogans, Naidu said, "Instead of knowing the background, some people went and expressed solidarity with the people who eulogise Afzal Guru ... any sympathy with these people is nothing but sheer anti-national behaviour and against the integrity and sovereignty of India."
Govt won't let me speak: Rahul Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday said the Narendra Modi government was "scared" and won't let him speak. He said, "I will speak. But they (government) will not let me speak because they are scared. They are scared of what I will speak in the parliament. So they will not let me speak."
BJP: Left is the 'witch' The BJP yesterday went hammer and tongs in the Lok Sabha against the Left parties, projecting them as the "witch" in the fairy tale of India's growth story. "When we were children, we saw some witch or some demon in the fairy tales. Likewise, there are witches in every growth story," BJP member Meenakshi Lekhi said, hitting out at the Left.
