The Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) has announced that it will undertake a comprehensive cleanliness drive every fortnight across all its bus stations. This includes station premises and administrative buildings.
The initiative’s aims are multi-pronged according to the MSRTC. One is to improve hygiene standards at ST bus stations. The other is to enhance overall passenger experience, which of course cleanliness and hygiene does and lastly it is about strengthening the public image of the state-run transport service.
Cleaning of seating areas, floors, walls, glass surfaces, drinking water points, restrooms, and office sections will be undertaken. There will be a focus on garbage removal, unwanted shrubs and vegetation removal, and debris to ensure a cleaner and better-maintained environment.
Separate bins will be provided for segregation and waste disposal. Emphasis on maintaining hygiene at drinking water facilities will ensure health safety. Heartening is the fact that accountability has been fixed with responsibility for strict and effective implementation of cleanliness action at each bus station assigned to the respective department heads.
We want to see cleaner ST stations. We do not want fancy fittings or luxury additions. Basics like timely repairs, working equipment, hygienic seating while awaiting buses, functioning, spotless restrooms, enough drinking water, regularly cleaned waste bins are basic but should be non-negotiable.
Buses, too, should be well maintained. Seats should be well demarcated. Staffers polite and well-informed, guiding passengers. Alarm systems, safety evacuation measures and an announcement system, audible and clear with trained announcers is important at these bus stations. Let us go for a complete ST turnaround and not settle for anything less than top amenities.
