A new 5.25-km promenade along the Mumbai Coastal Road between Marine Lines and Worli has been opened to the public today.
This is the first new major seafront public space in South Mumbai since the development of the Marine Drive promenade in the 1930s, and seen through that prism, this is truly historic. The seafront stretch includes green spaces, ornamental and native coastal vegetation, and has been developed as an eco-conscious recreational zone.
The new promenade is designed to serve both as a recreational area and a fitness zone, with cycling tracks, shaded seating, and extensive landscaping, official communication cited in our report stated.
The access of the new promenade will be free, and citizens can reach there through new underpasses at four locations- Bhulabhai Desai Road, Haji Ali Junction, Worli Dairy, and Bindumadhav Thackeray Chowk near Worli Seaface.
All underpasses include stairways and ramps to ensure accessibility for cyclists and persons with disabilities. Wheelchair access and inclusive design features have also been incorporated throughout the promenade.
Good lighting is a must. Signage inside, directing people where to go etc., will also be helpful. In the event of any lacunae, authorities must respond to plug in loopholes based on feedback.
The surface, most importantly, must stay the course and not come apart. Distances must be marked as fitness enthusiasts may find that helpful, through smart watches do the job too. Ramps for cyclists or disabled persons must be used by them and they must have right of way.
People need to use the new stretch with respect and regard for rules. Let us hope that the new value addition to the city’s landscape is top quality and citizens use it with pride. More power to spaces opening up to the people.
