For all its shortcomings, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has always looked after the interests of its players.
However, their recent decision to disallow Rajasthan from competing in the national championships because the association is led by the BCCI-suspended Lalit Modi is a low blow to the players.
Need a softer approach True, the BCCI has a right to take tough stands because it is the parent body of the affiliated units; but when the careers of cricketers are at stake, there must be a softer approach. After all, the players have not rubbed the BCCI the wrong way. Missing out on one season of Ranji Trophy is a huge loss for them.
The BCCI ought to be benevolent towards the players and give them a good year&rsquo;s notice to find places in other teams.
In the current scenario, the players, many of whom have shifted from other states to be professionals at Rajasthan, don&rsquo;t know where their tomorrow is.
Rajasthan is a talented outfit that enjoyed the rare distinction of winning the Ranji Trophy twice in a row (2011 and 2012). They have also been around in the domestic circuit for long and have produced some quality players for India.
With not enough time left to get roped in by other teams, the players are more than just on tenterhooks. Indeed, their problem needs to be addressed by the BCCI while they think about dealing with their troublesome foe Lalit Modi.
It should be stressed that a Rajasthan player fast bowler Pankaj Singh represented India in the recent Test series in England. The Rajasthan roster contains some talented players like former India under-19 captain Ashok Menaria, Robin Bist and Deepak Chahar. They must be protected now.
Cricket and cricketers cannot be sacrificed on the altar of administrative one-upmanship.
C&rsquo;mon BCCI, hold that whip for a while.
