A recent visit to Dombivli revealed the appalling state of the so-called “deluxe” toilets

The shameful state of public toilets at railway stations has become a matter of grave concern for female commuters across suburban stations, especially at Mulund, our extensive report highlighted. While the Central Railway (CR) had entered into an agreement with the DMart Foundation for keeping toilets clean at prominent stations like CSMT and Byculla, the situation on the ground remains pathetic.
A recent visit to Dombivli revealed the appalling state of the so-called “deluxe” toilets. Inside the ladies’ toilet, a man was found sleeping, while hawkers used the space to store their goods. The toilets at Mulund station were unusable. The toilets are blocked. The glass in the toilets is missing or broken. The cleaning staff is either indifferent or unaware. The overall situation is unbearable for women.
When we talk about AC trains and bullet trains, are we first of all not supposed to get these basics right? Why tout hi-tech aspirations when our local commuters have to suffer unhygienic and unsafe conditions? All that flagging off, VIP visits and upgradation flies in the face of such an abysmal scenario. Women’s health is severely compromised because of a lack of toilets. There are instances when women do not drink enough water in public spaces because they are quite rightly concerned they will have no access to any toilets.
This is a very significant aspect and in fact, also stops women from going out. It cannot be dismissed. Every station needs dedicated cleaning staff. Lights in the toilet. Running water. Proper doors that lock. Cleanliness inside. Infra that is in working condition. This is not asking for luxuries but necessities. Let us get our on ground, rudimentary systems right before chest puffing and thumping about all the advances we are making. The local commuter has a right to travel with dignity.
