Mumbai's&nbsp;13-year-old cricketer Suryansh Shedge did the incredible yesterday by slamming a triple ton in a Giles Shield limited overs inter-school match.
Suryansh smashed 326 in just 137 deliveries for Gundecha Education Academy (Kandivli) against SPSS Mumbadevi Niketan (Borivli) in a 45-overs-a-side game organised by Mumbai Schools Sports Association (MSSA) at Shivaji Park yesterday.
Batting on the Young Maharashtra CC pitch, Suryansh hit 53 fours and three sixes which landed at corners of Shivaji Park to create a buzz at the famous venue. Suryansh dominated his team's innings to the point that the second highest scorer was Manit Dakshini, who scored 37.
Chunk of the scoring Vivan Sampat contributed 27 off 15 balls in the team's total of 542-5 in 45 overs which included 60 penalty and 30 extras. Suryansh, who has represented Mumbai under-14, performed well in the inter-school competition last year as well. His 380 aggregate included two centuries which earned him the best batsman prize in the Giles Shield. A schoolboy cricketer scoring an unbeaten triple hundred in a limited overs game is astounding. It also causes skeptics to question the quality of the bowling attack. Suryansh admitted that he faced some ordinary bowling. "I don't think it was a decent bowling attack. The fielding was also not up to the mark. But after all, it's a triple century and I enjoyed this innings. I am confident of repeating this feat against a good attack," Suryansh told mid-day yesterday.
Lucky escapes The Class VIII student reached his maiden double century in the 22nd over. Within a few minutes he was dropped at mid-off. There was more good fortune to come. "I got a second life at 270 when a catch was put down at deep mid-wicket. I felt God has given me another reprieve and I must cash in and score a triple ton. This innings has given me the confidence to score beyond 300," said Suryansh. Thanks to Suryansh's triple hundred, Gundecha Education Academy ended up scoring 542. Their opponents provided a feeble response and were bundled out for only 55 in just 16.3 overs. The right-handed batsman's coach Manish Bangera, who played for Mumbai in limited overs cricket, was thrilled. "Suryansh's fearlessness stands out. I told him if you are good enough you will take your team to the elite division. He suffers a lot of anxiety while batting and we need to calm him down," said Bangera. MSSA cricket secretary Nadim Memon urged the Mumbai selectors to get note of this performance. "He played a brilliant innings to stand out in record books," said Memon.
