‘Patience at the net was key’: Indian badminton star Lakshya Sen

“I don’t think a lack of confidence affected my mid-match lull. I was just focused on trying to win the next point. It’s just that Christie was playing very well during that phase,” said Sen.

Star Indian shuttler Lakshya Sen, who triumphed at the recent Hylo Open in Germany, believes a patient approach, with an emphasis on controlling the area around the net, was key to defeating Indonesian World No. 9 Jonatan Christie in the final.

“I was just trying to exercise patience while playing against him. He was playing a very solid game and wasn’t making too many errors, so I had to wait for the right chances, especially in the second half of the first game. Overall, the strategy was not to play an all-out attacking game, but to keep things steady and control the game from the net. The idea was not to give him too many chances to attack me and finish off rallies,” said Sen, who beat Christie 21-17, 21-10, during a virtual press conference facilitated by the Badminton Association of India (BAI) on Tuesday.
