As they wrap up the shoot of Girls Will Be Girls, Richa-Ali say making their maiden production was a joyous as well jittery experience

When Richa Chadha and Ali Fazal launched Pushing Buttons Studios in 2021, they knew that production would not be an easy affair. The first-time producers, however, are pleasantly surprised by how smoothly their maiden offering, Girls Will Be Girls, has come to fruition. Shuchi Talati’s directorial venture went on floors last November, and was wrapped up in the last week of December. Fazal says it’s an ineffable joy to see one’s first production nearing the finish line. “The feeling is an interesting mix of jitters and excitement. I am excited only because I am in a position where we get to prepare stories in collaboration with a bunch of cool and talented people. I am so proud of our actors and the team who have outdone themselves. Now, we gear up for phase two — post-production,” he says.

Girls Will Be Girls, starring Malayalam actor Kani Kusruti, tells the story of a 16-year-old girl in an elite boarding school whose rebellious coming-of-age phase is hijacked by her mother. The film, which received the Aide aux Cinemas du Monde grant from France in 2021, was shot in a start-to-finish schedule in Uttarakhand. To Chadha, the Indo-French co-production holds a special place. “It will always be a memorable film because many firsts are attached to it. It is the first film from my production house, and the first one after my wedding. This movie helped me evolve as an actor as well as a producer.”
