A new rooftop bar in Powai offers a lot more than a picturesque waterfront view
A view of the top floor overlooking Powai Lake
Located on the top floor of the swank lake-facing five-star in the city, newly-opened Nox at the Westin Mumbai Powai Lake, isn’t just another bar. It’s a special Mumbai experience — luxe, expansive, and irresistibly vibe-y. With 9,800 square feet of beautifully done-up space (think rich wood tones, glassy breaks in texture, nooks and alcoves, curated lighting, huge bar, open kitchen), there’s a corner for every kind of night: girls’ night, expats in town, post-meeting hangouts, or that long overdue gang catch-up.
Procyon cocktail, Martini beyond and Tartufo e fungi
But what really sets Nox apart? The view. Panoramic Powai Lake covered by rain fog and the clink of cocktail glasses — it’s a sundowner scene that we long for in a space-starved city. The rooftop bar (with indoor and outdoor seating) has a lounge-y vibe that seamlessly translates across every aspect: from the crockery (textured plates that mimic lake ripples and starry skies), to the cocktails (that at times arrive lit and smoking), to the European and Mediterranean menu that covers all bases without making you overthink. Light bites, comfort food, wood-fired pizza, hearty mains, take your pick.
Cerelestial prawns. Pics/Sayyed Sameer Abedi; Nox
We start with Cerelestial prawns (Rs 600), golden bites of multigrain cereal-crusted prawns, elevated with fermented butter and salted egg yolk; did somebody say healthy gourmet bar bite? There are many other small plates to try; even wedges get a batata harra-style twist. Pizza lovers are in for a treat, the Tartufo e fungi pizza (Rs 1200) is why you won’t have FOMO of not being in Italy this summer — truffle cream, mushrooms, aged parmesan, and that chewy, charred Neapolitan crust. We’ll return just for this.
For cocktails, we kick things off with the Procyon (Rs 900) — a pisco + aperol number that shows up smoked and garnished with rosemary, smoke on the (Powai Lake) water it is. Then there’s Martini and beyond (Rs 900) — a Jägermeister martini with a sexy dusting of chocolate. Deep, moody, and unforgettable, served in a glass that will make you reach for your phone camera.
Curated lighting and alcoves create different zones in the bar
For mains, we love the Lamb tagine (Rs 1100) — the meat is sublimely tender, it falls apart in our mouth. The stew is rich and spiced just right, with surprise hits of sweetness and crunch from dry fruits. The rice is delicately fragrant topped with birista. We would have scraped the bowl clean but have stuffed ourselves with the pizza.
We wrap up with Lemune (Rs 550), a citrusy, white chocolate-encased mousse with a lemon jelly heart. We aren’t fond of the eggy crumble it sits on, but served with their in-house matcha ice cream, it feels like a cool breeze on a humid Mumbai night. Depending on your plan, Nox is where your evening can begin (and end). It’s smartly priced, given the property it is set in. Crowd pleasing bar bites, a soundtrack of easy lounge mixes, cocktails that entertain, and that unbeatable lake view, make it a must-visit.
