The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has collected fines totalling Rs 90,22,626 across 5,256 enforcement cases after rolling out its new Solid Waste Management Bye-laws on April 1, with civic officials taking action against everything from littering to public urination and unauthorised dumping of construction debris over the five-month period ending 31 August.

The Bye-laws, which came into force this April, empower BMC to penalise a wide range of acts that affect cleanliness, public health, and the environment, including littering, spitting, open defecation, feeding animals or birds in ways that create nuisance, washing vehicles or utensils in public, failing to keep one's premises clean, handing over unsegregated waste, and violations by street vendors and hawkers, among others.
