While construction of an internal road at Aarey Milk Colony has been partially completed, the authorities have ignored the pointed steel roads jutting out of the road surface, which can turn fatal for motorists, especially bikers. This has left locals questioning whether the authorities are waiting for a serious accident to swing into action.

On the internal road stretch of Aarey Milk Colony that goes from Aarey hospital towards New Zealand Hostel, there is a section that is being made of cement concrete (CC). Along this stretch, the CC work on the road leading to the CEO’s bungalow is complete, while work is pending on 100 metres. This is where the iron rods have been erected, posing a serious threat.

Motorist Kunal C, who recently visited the stretch for a walk, said, “It is a good thing that the road is constructed, but at the same time, the authorities should see to it that the metal rods coming out from the CC road are properly covered. Currently, these exposed rods pose a grave threat to motorists, particularly two-wheeler riders. Dashing into these sharp metal or iron roads could end up seriously injuring someone.”

It may be noted that the location where these roads are coming up is close to a turn where vehicles drive at a high speed. Forest department staff who patrol the area also told mid-day that these sharp metal rods can pose a threat to the wild animals, including spotted deer and leopards that cross the road during late night hours.

Independent civil engineer Biju Augustin said, “The iron rods or reinforcing steel that are used during CC road construction are left open so that they can be connected to the iron rods while making the other side of the road. But these rods need to be covered so that accidents can be avoided. The best way is to put a danger tape with reflectors on the same so that motorists and bikers are aware of them. Another way is to make sure that these rods are tilted towards the road direction, which is less dangerous than the rods standing upright.”
