Residents of Ghatkopar West were in for a scare when water from a burst pipeline entered their homes at around 3 am on Saturday. The pipeline burst not just flooded about 100 homes in the area, but also the strong pressure bouncing off water about 10 feet in the air, led to the caving in of a section of the road. Although the British-era pipeline was repaired around 7.30 am, water supply to the eastern suburb was impacted  all through Saturday.

The incident took place at Asalfa village near Gosiya Masjid. “The entire road was submerged in water and the flooding washed away several parked bikes. Since it was night and people were asleep, it led to utter confusion and chaos,” said Prakash More, ex-corporator of the area. The pipeline is 20 feet under the ground.

“Repair work was completed in the morning around 7.30 am. But it will take time for full water supply and pressure to be restored. Reconstruction of the caved-in road will take a few days and work has begun,” said Mahadev Shinde, ward officer of L Ward, working closely with the Hydraulic Department.
