The officials on Wednesday said that police have seized 34 kg of ganja valued at Rs 6.89 lakh from a taxi in Maharashtra's Thane district and arrested four persons in this connection, reported news agency PTI.

Acting on a tip-off, the police intercepted the taxi carrying three persons at Mahajanwadi in the Mira Gaothan area on May 29.


"A thorough search of the vehicle led to the recovery of 34.484 kg of ganja," Mira Bhayander-Vasai Virar Police's Assistant Commissioner of Police, Dr Vijaykumar Marathe said, reported PTI.



The seized contraband is estimated to be valued at Rs 6,89,680 in the illegal market, according to police.

The three taxi occupants, including its driver, all hailing from neighbouring Mumbai, were arrested. The police also seized Rs 7,500 cash from the accused and impounded the vehicle, the official said, reported PTI.

During the investigation, the police on Tuesday arrested another person, a resident of Kamothe in Navi Mumbai, who allegedly supplied the contraband to the other accused, he said.

Man held with Rs 2.7 lakh hydro ganja in Navi Mumbai

In another case, the police have arrested a 23-year-old man after seizing hydro ganja valued at Rs 2.78 lakh from his possession in Maharashtra's Navi Mumbai township, an official said on May 29, reported PTI.

A police patrolling team spotted two men roaming suspiciously on a scooter below Jui bridge in the Vashi area in the wee hours of Tuesday.

The police intercepted them and during a search found hydro ganja concealed in the dicky of their vehicle, the official from Vashi police station said, reported PTI.

While one of the persons was apprehended, the other one managed to escape, he said.

The police have registered a case against the accused under provisions of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, the official said, reported PTI.

"The police are now trying to find out the source of the contraband and to whom the accused planned to sell it," he added.

Cocaine worth Rs 8.6 crore recovered from stomach of Ugandan national

Meanwhile, pellets containing 866 grams of cocaine were recovered from the stomach of a Ugandan national after he was intercepted at the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) here, a customs official said on May 29, reported PTI.

The passenger, who landed in Mumbai on the intermediate night of May 24 and 25, appeared uncomfortable during questioning which gave rise to suspicion, he said, reported PTI.

A medical examination showed that he had ingested yellow-coloured pellets.

After the pellets were removed through a medical procedure, they were found to contain a total of 886 grams of cocaine worth Rs 8.66 crore.

The man was subsequently arrested and further probe was on, the official said.
