The issue of unregulated private cars illegally ferrying passengers within Sanjay Gandhi National Park (SGNP) persists unabated. On Friday, a CNG vehicle used for such trips caught fire. Fortunately, no passengers were inside. In September 2024, mid-day had already reported on the issue of unauthorised taxis operating inside SGNP.

Regulars and environmentalists have stated that, despite a clear ban, locals are operating these vehicles with impunity. None of them has valid permits, insurance, or fitness certificates. SGNP authorities, along with the RTO and police, must act strictly. If such incidents repeat, the park administration could face international consequences, as foreign tourists often use these vehicles.”

It is shocking that the problem has been flagged but not stamped out. This fire incident should now prompt authorities to crack down on the illegal and dangerous vehicles inside the park. We profess to be so proud of this park, which is within our city limits. The national park is 87 sq km in area and houses the 2400-year-old Kanheri caves, sculpted by monks out of the rocky basaltic cliffs.

The park authorities need to work in tandem with traffic officials and whoever else is responsible to remove these vehicles altogether. We are surely looking at an impending disaster as these seem to have poor to no maintenance and have been informed that they are, at times, being driven at high speeds.

One cannot expect tourists/visitors to distinguish between legal vehicles and illegal cabs. They will simply board a cab at their convenience. One hopes this is cleared at the earliest, with all agencies working together. This stunning space that we have is worth preserving, and safety is paramount with the number of visitors it attracts.
