With rampant misuse of QR codes meant for local train ticketing, Mumbai Railways is finally switching to dynamic QR codes so commuters can no longer bypass ticketing by using downloaded codes.

Currently, QR codes pasted at stations are being misused by passengers who replicate and store them in their phone galleries, then scan them to buy tickets only when ticket checkers are present, according to a mid-day report.

This misuse not only causes revenue loss but is also unfair to regular commuters who pay for their tickets and travel.

Dynamic QR codes change regularly and can include time-based or user-specific data. This prevents them from being reused by the general public, effectively blocking the loophole exploited with static codes.

While it is heartening to note that the Railways has flagged the loophole in the system and is moving towards plugging that, it is a sad commentary on commuters.

Cheating the system and other fellow travellers simply because one can puts a big question mark on one’s ethics. While some may scoff, stating that it is naive to expect ethical behaviour, it is certainly not.
This is theft, plain and simple, from the coffers of the lifeline of Mumbai. It cannot be explained away as just a trivial ticket or as something insignificant, as everyone does this.

As a city, we are quick to blame the Railways whenever we are inconvenienced. Overcrowded compartments, late trains, no announcements and at times shoddy infrastructure. Yet, are we as commuters perfect, above board, honest, and responsible? Expecting excellence from the service but abusing, robbing it in return. It’s time for some soul searching and answers from the conscienceless breed of ticketless commuters.
