Uttarkashi Tunnel Rescue: Rescued workers share shocking ordeal of being trapped

Two workers who were trapped in the Silkyara Tunnel talk about their 17-day-long experience trapped in the tunnel following the Uttarkashi Tunnel Rescue. The workers had a sigh of relief after the anxiety-filled initial 24 hours. Vishwajeet Kumar Verma and Subodh Kumar Verma expressed their gratitude to the rescuers and the government as well. Rescued worker Vishwajeet Kumar Verma said, "When the debris fell, we knew that we were stuck. For the first 10-15 hours we faced difficulty. But later, a pipe was put in to provide us with rice, dal and dry fruits. Later a mic was installed and I was able to talk to my family members...I am happy now, will celebrate Diwali now." "The first 24 hours were tough but after that food was provided to us through a pipe. Subodh Kumar Verma, another rescued worker said, “I am absolutely fine and in good health now…”.

Uttarkashi Tunnel Rescue: Visuals of the rescue of the 41 trapped workers

In a major victory in the Uttarkashi tunnel rescue operation, the NDRF on Nov 28 rescued all trapped workers from the Silkyara tunnel. The NDRF personnel entered the Silkyara tunnel to rescue the workers on the 17th day of the tunnel collapse. The rescuers entered the tunnel by completing 45-meter pipe drilling to evacuate the workers. The rescued workers were shifted to hospitals for further treatment in 30 ambulances which were on standby at the incident site. The ambulances were fully equipped to provide enhanced medical assistance to patients during transportation. Hours after the safe evacuation of 41 trapped workers from the Silkyara tunnel on November 28, Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke to the rescued men over the phone. Earlier on Nov 12, Uttarkashi Tunnel Collapse occurred from Silkyara to Barkot due to debris falling in a 60-meter stretch on the Silkyara side.

The rescue operations at the Uttarkashi tunnel collapse site are going on in full swing. On November 21, the first visuals of the trapped workers emerged as an endoscopy camera was sent inside the rubble. The family members of the stranded workers had a ray of hope after the visuals emerged. For the last 10 days, 41 workers have been trapped inside the tunnel. Hot meals were being served to the trapped men through a six-inch pipeline. Vertical drilling machines have arrived at the spot to accelerate the rescue operations. International tunnelling experts were present at the spot and they assured the safety of trapped men. International Tunnelling and Underground Space Association president Arnold Dix, who has been roped in as part of the ongoing rescue efforts at the Uttarkashi tunnel collapse site, on Tuesday said he was absolutely sure that the 41 trapped workers will come home soon.

Indian Army started the work to build a platform to start vertical drilling to reach out to trapped workers through vertical drilling. However, the drilling will start once the construction of the track is completed.

Rescue operations are underway for the fifth day to rescue the 40 trapped workers. An under-construction tunnel between Silkyara, Dandalgaon on Brahmakhal-Yamunotri NH collapsed in the early hours of Nov 12. A worker from Jharkhand, Vishwajeet is trapped in the tunnel along with 40 laborers. His brother Indrajeet talked to him through and encouraged him to stay strong. Indrajeet, a resident of Jharkhand, whose 38-year-old brother Vishwajeet is trapped in the tunnel of Uttarkashi along with 40 laborers. While talking to ANI, Indrajeet said that he had talked to Vishwajeet through pipeline. Vishwajeet trapped in the tunnel told that food and water is available inside the tunnel. Indrajeet assured his brother Vishwajeet that soon all the workers trapped in the tunnel would come out and they would go to their village in Jharkhand to celebrate Chhath Puja. Union Minister Vijay Kumar Singh reviewed the Uttarkashi tunnel rescue operations in the under-construction tunnel in Uttarakhand’s Uttarkashi on November 16. Uttarakhand DGP Ashok Kumar says, "...Best possible efforts are being made here - by the agencies of Central Government and State Government. I think we should be patient and have faith. It will take time but the best possible efforts are being made..."

Four persons have died due to a major landslide in Irshalwadi village of Khalapur tehsil of Maharashtra’s Raigad. At least three persons sustained injuries in the incident.
