Maxwell, who earlier took three wickets in two overs, was man of the match with a 58-ball unbeaten 103 as the Australians chased down England's 155 for nine in the 19th over. Australia had a rocky start to their run chase, but Maxwell rebuilt the innings with stands with D'Arcy Short (30), Travis Head (6) and Alex Carey (5 not out) to secure victory. England pacer David Willey finished with three for 28.
Earlier, England, troubled by Australia's spinners, lost their last six wickets for 33 in registering a below-par total of 155. Dawid Malan, who had a splendid Ashes outing, cracked 50 off 36 balls with five fours and two sixes but England fell away after reaching 94 for two in the 10th over.
Brief scores
England 161-5 in 20 overs (D Malan 50, E Morgan 22; G Maxwell 3-10, A Agar 2-15) lost to Australia 161-5 in 18.3 overs (G Maxwell 103*, D Short 30; D Willey 3-28, M Wood 1-26) by 5 wickets
