Why Switching To An IB School Would Be Ideal For Your Child

IB School

Choosing the right school for your child is an integral part of parenting. Parents prefer and seek the best for their children, which also holds very true for the child’s education. Recently, many parents have rightly chosen IB schools for their children, as these institutions have various advantages contained in their immaculate curriculum.

There are quite a few schools in Bangalore that follow the IB board, of which one of the leading schools is the Bangalore International School, which has been here since 1969 and was also one of the first schools to adopt the IB curriculum. Over the years, students from the school have successfully been accepted into international universities, making it ideal for most parents.

The faculty at BIS and the IB curriculum both contribute to the rising success of the students. Some aspects of the curriculum that contribute to students’ admission into colleges are the Theory Of Knowledge essays and the Extended Essay.

Theory of Knowledge(TOK) is a part of the student’s high school diploma education where they try to better understand the nature of knowledge and how we came to possess the same in the first place. This form of teaching encourages the students to think better and interpret the information they receive rather than blindly accepting it at face value. The teachers at BIS continue to promote independent thinking in their students with the Theory of Knowledge. They are with the students at every step of this process, guiding them in writing near-perfect essays & and performing oral presentations for assessment. The teachers ensure not to interfere with the student's views and instead just focus on providing necessary guidance. Thanks to the curriculum & the expert guidance of the teachers of BIS, the students graduate out to the world as independent thinkers.

The Extended Essay is a part of the IB curriculum assessment that asks students to choose a topic and write an independent, self-directed piece of research. As with the TOK, the teachers at BIS do not interfere with the topics selected by the students. In fact, each student is assigned a mentor, who will better nudge them in the right direction. The school staff is adamant that the students develop the knowledge independently rather than directly reading the information given in their textbooks. This allows the students to better prepare for undergraduate research, which, in turn, enables them to learn and understand a topic of their interest.

Their Theory of Knowledge presentation & essay and their Extended Essays play a significant role in getting accepted to international universities. Incidentally, BIS has successfully placed many of its students in the international undergraduate programs.

BIS has also encouraged the students with the Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS) programme mandatory in all IB schools. Through this programme, the students are encouraged in arts, physical activities, and community service. The students of BIS have performed many community service activities. Recently they organised a bake sale, wherein the proceeds were then donated to an animal shelter. The students also conducted a donation drive during the Christmas season, and they then donated the resources received from this to orphanages and old age homes. This leads to the students recognising their privilege, leading them to become better functioning members of society from an early age rather than being ignorant of the conditions faced by many.

Currently, at least 30% of the graduating class has been accepted into international colleges and universities. The previous batches have also delivered similar results. Any school can adopt the IB curriculum, but in the end, it’s how the staff come together to execute the same that decides the success of the students. BIS students can proudly boast how well the curriculum has helped them face the real world.
