Mumbai: Three cops under the scanner for extorting Rs 12 lakh

A senior police inspector of Crime Branch unit XII was transferred while an inquiry was set up against three policemen of the unit, who allegedly extorted R12 lakh from a truck owner. Interestingly, the truck owner is the relative of a policeman, who asked him to complain to the DCP of Zone XII.

According to the police, few days ago, three constables from Crime Branch unit XII went to a godown of Food Corporation of India (FCI) in Borivli East. The police said that several illegal activities take place in the area and many food products are taken away illegally.

A police officer said, “The three constables intercepted a truck full of food items. They seized the truck and threatened the driver and cleaner that they would file a case against them. The cops threatened the truck owner too and later demanded money for not filing a case.”

Negotiations started between the cops and the truck owner. Finally the owner decided to pay Rs 12 lakh to the cops. The cops took the money and let the truck go. They later went to their unit in Dahisar said the police source. Another police officer said, “The truck belonged to a relative of a policeman.

The policeman told him to send a written complaint to DCP M Ramkumar (Zone XII).” DCP Ramkumar called senior police officials from Crime Branch unit XII to his office in Dahisar. He has ordered a high-level inquiry in the matter. DCP of Crime Branch, Mohan Dahikar, said, “By the order of Joint Commissioner Atulchandra Kulkarni of Crime Branch, an inquiry will be conducted by me.”

A police officer from Crime Branch said, “After the matter reached the DCP of Zone XII on Friday, senior top cops of Crime Branch came to know about it on the same day. Early on Saturday morning a senior IPS officer transferred senior inspector Madhav More of unit XII Crime Branch. Action against the three policemen will be taken soon. The top cop of Crime Branch does not want tainted cops there.”
