Confusion was the first feeling that engulfed us when we entered Cafeette Restaurant, an eatery that has sprung up on Old Airport Road just a couple of days ago.

The white walled interior with black corporate chairs gave the place a formal look unlike the cozy coffee nook that we had expected.

Still not sure of the kind of cuisine it serves, we decided to take a look at the menu, which turned out to be a near replica of all those city restaurants that are famous for their fiery red fried kebabs and ghee rice.

The Chindian menu, a mix of Indian and Chinese dishes seemed to offer everything from noodles to dal makhni and seems quite a hotch potch affair.

u00a0However, asking the staff to recommend a few specialties was a mistake as they were completely oblivious of what went into the dishes as well as their origin or taste.

Clueless, they ran helter skelter probably to the chef in the kitchen every time we enquired about a dish.

We finally decided to break the ice with Mint Lemonade (Rs 25) and a Mix Mocktail (Rs 25) accompanied by Lemon and Salt Chicken Kebab (Rs 125) and Cafeette Crispy Chicken with garlic paste (Rs 135).

Why someone would mention salt as a special ingredient in a dish is beyond our comprehension.

The tall glass of Mint Lemonade was a cool blend of nimbu and pudina, while the Mix Mocktail tasted like a fruit punch with an overdose of banana. It was a long wait before the Crispy Chicken finally made its way.

Dripping with oil and looking exactly like the fried chicken of the globally renowned crispy fried chicken chain; Cafeette Crispy Chicken was a disappointment. But the tangy and succulent Lemon and Salt kebabs saved the show.

u00a0Our next order was the Chicken Chopsuey dipped in pineapple sauce (Rs 115). Mildly spiced and aptly sweet, it is a delight for those who like their daily dose of veggies.

Still hungry, we opted for Cyclone Parantha (Rs 40) and Mushroom Masala (Rs 75).

Peppery and tangy, the Mushroom Masala was the perfect accompaniment to the Cyclone Parantha, which almost resembled the huge and flaky Ceylon Parantha.

Stuffed and content, we wanted to leave on a sweet note and settled for the gooey Caribbean Cake Fudge (Rs 85) and the fruity Golden Cherry sundae (Rs 50).

Caribbean Cake Fudge was a chocolate lover's delight with sliced fruitcakes smeared in chocolate sauce and dipped in chocolate ice cream sprinkled with nuts.

The Golden Cherry was a blend of apricot and butterscotch ice cream scoops with bits of cherries, laden with fruits.

Located on the busy Old Airport Road, in an area surrounded by offices, Cafeette Restaurant is ideal for those who want to rush out for a quick lunch.

But if you are looking at a weekend hangout with friends or a romantic corner for your special one, you might like to explore other options.
