Jemimah Rodrigues' Christmas has come early! It was celebration time yesterday when the Mumbai girl slammed 202 off 163 balls while representing the city in the West Zone under-19 tournament against Saurashtra at Aurangabad.

Bandra-based Jemimah, 17, led from the front as she slammed her maiden double century to help Mumbai register a 285-run win. Her knock was laced with 21 boundaries and helped Mumbai post a mammoth 347 for two in 50 overs. In the course of her near-unbelievable effort, Jemimah put on a 300-run second wicket partnership with Sejal Raut (98).
Saurashtra were then skittled out for 62 in 39.4 overs thanks to some impressive bowling from pacer Sayali Satghare (3-20) and two wickets each from medium-pacer Fatima Jaffer and off-spinner Jhanvi Kate.
"This is my first double century. It's a big day in my career. I thank the Almighty, without whom this would not have been possible. I enjoy playing in pressure situations. I like to take responsibility because if I do well, my team stands a chance to win," Jemimah told mid-day over the phone after her knock.
Jemimah is literally the pillar of her team. In Mumbai's first match of the tournament against Gujarat on November 1, Jemimah smashed 178 to guide her team to a 262-run win. In Mumbai's last match against Baroda on Saturday, she scored just 17 and the team lost.
"I want to realise my dream of playing for the Indian women's team like my idol Mithali Raj. In March, I was a part of the senior West Zone team that played against Central Zone which Mithali was a part of and we lost," she said. Mumbai coach Jayesh Dadarkar called Jemimah the next big thing in women's cricket. "She happens to be the captain and yes, we depend on her a lot. She is a very mature player and performs her roles to perfection.
"She also puts a high price on her wicket. She is the next big thing in women's cricket and has the ability to be in the Indian team. I hope it happens soon. She is committed to the game and her hard work has paid off. I am very proud of her," said Dadarkar, a former club cricketer.
