  • Cuttack city celebrates silver jublee of its brotherhood

    The silver city of Cuttack is famous for its craftsmanship on the ‘Puja Pandals’ in the form of silver tableaux during Durga Puja celebrations. People from all across India flock Cuttack city to witness these grand silver tableaux and to offer prayers to the goddess. Adorned with gold and silver jwellery, the idol of goddess Durga bedazzled all visitors. More than 250 to 500 kilograms of silver and around 20 kilograms of gold was put to construct the glittery backdrop of the idol. According to the locals, the idol alone adorned jewellery of about 50 kilograms, with the crown weighing about 20 kilograms. The grand and glittery celebration of Durga Puja in Cuttack is not just limited to Hindu religion. In Dargah market of Cuttack, Hindu- Muslims have been celebrating this festival for last 25 years. The people from various faiths donate generously for designing and decorating these mega tableaus on the occasion of Durga Puja. Although the numbers of Hindus in this region are lesser than the Muslims, the people celebrate all festivals with same fervour. The festival of Muharram falls around the same time with the festival of Dussehra. But the Muslim brothers keep sanctity of Hindu festival Dussehra as high as they observe Muharram

    Muslim women in Vadodara have come up with a special type of yoga by incorporating Quranic verses into it to counter the Islamic critics of the ancient practice. A non-government organisation (NGO) has started yoga classes for Muslim women and has brought in Quranic verses and names of ‘Allah’ for chanting purposes to encourage more people to take up the practice and allay any concerns of it being against Islam. Yoga trainer said the basic aspects of yoga postures were unchanged. Scores of hijab-clad women come to attend these classes every day to practice yoga asanas and meditate.   • Muslims organise 'Bhandara' for the visitors of Ramdevra fair, spreading brotherhood

    Every year, lakhs of devotees, irrespective of their caste, creed or religion take up a journey to Ramdevra, a village in Jaisalmer district of Rajasthan. They come to pay tributes at the Samadhi of Baba Ramdev and seek blessings. They also attend the famous Ramdevra fair, which is organized after him. Baba Ramdev was a fourteenth century ruler and saint who devoted his life for the upliftment of the downtrodden. He took Samadhi at the age of 33 and today, he is worshiped by many social groups of India as Ishta-deva. Community kitchens are organized at various places of the state for the people who come to visit the Ramdevri fair, however, the one in Pushkar Road has become an exemplar of communal harmony. The reason being the people from Muslim community serve food to visitors here, irrespective of their religion. Elders can be seen instilling the sense of brotherhood and compassion into their young ones by letting them serve ‘Poori-subzi, an Indian cuisine on their folk’s platter. Along with the community Kitchens, a beautiful stage was also set up where pictures and idols of Baba Ram devi ji were kept. The burning of Incense sticks and singing of bhajans and kirtans created a holy atmosphere all around. As Baba Ram Devji believed in equality of all human beings and treated everyone equally, people of different religious faith pay homage to this saint, thus strengthening the secular fabric of our country.
