FIFA U-17 World Cup: Brazil's mega vision is Ronaldinho's 'Hollywood pass'

The Brazil U-17 footballers here yesterday were seen improving their peripheral vision, which is unusual in football practice sessions. Peripheral vision is the ability to see objects and movement outside the direct line of vision. It's a side vision. It is, "the work of the rods, nerve cells located largely outside the macula (the centre) of the retina," says medicinenet.com.

This is how they practised: In front of a player, his teammate stood with a black piece of paper or thin plastic as seen from a distance. While the player stands to his left, another one, at a distance of around four to five feet, is positioned angularly to the right. As soon as the player on the left lifts his hand, the player with the restricted vision has to pass the ball to the player standing on the right. It might sound incredible, but most of the time, the players with restricted vision passed the ball correctly.

It can either be called a no-look pass or a 'Hollywood pass', named after Ronaldinho, who used to look left and pass the ball to the player to his right or vice versa. It was similar to what Marcos Antonio tried to do against Spain on Saturday he passed through to the Spanish defence to find Paulinho. "I was happy to go through the defence and had the goalkeeper in front of me at a distance. I thought Paulinho was in a better position to score. So I passed the ball, but could not reach him. Later, the coach said that I could have dribbled past the goalkeeper and thought about scoring or passing. These things happen in a match," said Antonio.
