Let’s take a moment to look back-and to reflect locating and activating our best selves.
International Women’s Day
In today’s fast-paced, multitasking world, we are so deeply immersed in managing work stress and navigating the hustle culture of corporate life that we rarely pause to reflect. We are constantly moving forward, often focusing more on our weaknesses than our strengths. But the truth of the matter is, we can’t be perfect at everything we do. Instead of being average at many things, we are better off honing and perfecting our strengths.
Let’s take a moment to look back-and to reflect locating and activating our best selves. and let's see how our brain cells prosper. When we do, we engage our minds in a way that sparks joy, enthusiasm, pride, and motivation. Let me start with my journey.
The Women Who Have Inspired Me
Every day, I am inspired by the incredible women in my life-my family, friends, and colleagues-who have shaped me into the person I am today. I have had two distinct and meaningful periods of mentorship in my life.
1. The First Mentor - My Mother
The first was during my childhood, looking up to my mother, who has been my mentor to this day. She has always pushed boundaries-whether societal or personal-and led by example. A media professional who sacrificed her career to build a better future for her family, for her children, she mastered the art of balancing multiple roles with grace and strength.
Even in her most challenging moments, she kept going, faced every difficulty head-on, and never let setbacks define her. Watching her navigate life with such fearlessness and resilience inspired me to do the same-to be independent, focused, and undeterred by distractions.
Growing up, I sometimes resented her strictness, especially being a typical Punjabi mom, but I now realize she shaped my life in the best possible way. At pivotal points in my life in my career too she has supported me by being a sounding board and helped me go forward when I doubted my own abilities. She stood by me like a rock through my thick and thin. She is larger than life- bold yet gentle, tough yet loving. I am forever grateful for the independence, resilience, and ‘never give up’ attitude she instilled in me and ofcouse my happy attitude is what I have received from my mother. She is an absolute perfect mother for me and my mentor.
2. My Mentors at Digital Media Sales
The second most transformative phase of my life has been my 14-year career in digital media sales. I have been incredibly fortunate to be surrounded by exceptional leaders, mentors, and colleagues who believed in me, supported my growth, and opened-up new opportunities.
Among them, some of the most influential mentors have been women-strong, driven, and fearless. They taught me the power of ambition, perseverance, and goal-setting, they helped me evolved-both personally and professionally. I continue to look up to these women who, over time, have become more than mentors; they have become family.
I am also grateful for the genuine friendships I have formed in my professional journey. These relationships have not only enriched my career but have also made my corporate experience more meaningful. Thank you to my people.
Career Milestones That Make Me Proud
Throughout my sales career, I have received many recognitions and accolades, but one award holds a special place in my heart-the "More Value for Money in Sales" award from Business Standard.
It was my first major recognition at the start of my corporate journey, and it motivated me tremendously. That achievement set the foundation for my confidence and determination, and from that point onward, I have been fortunate to receive acknowledgments in every organization I have worked with.
My Advice for Women in Corporate Life
1. Be confident. Know your strengths and leverage them.
2. Set yourself apart. Don’t just excel at your job-be a team player and help others navigate their challenges. True leaders uplift those around them.
3. Be a people person, not just the center of attention. A successful career isn’t about being in the limelight; it’s about building meaningful connections.
4. Not everyone at work is your friend. Be mindful of this when venting frustrations or sharing vulnerabilities. Be cautious of who you trust with your thoughts and challenges.
5. Don’t be a part of triggering situations, It can be all too easy to get caught up in workplace tittle-tattle, but maintaining a level of distance and an air of professionalism is always advisable for ambitious professionals. Workplace gossip is often a reflection of insecurity, and you can be their next topic of discussion so avoid them, those who engage in it don’t last long.
6. Set boundaries and focus on long-term growth instead of momentary validation.
Life Is Bigger Than Work
One thing to always remember: Success should not be measured by how much we sacrifice, but by how much we grow and enjoy the journey.
At the end of the day, work, success, and money are just parts of our lives. Our health, well- being, and relationships matter far more. When we spend time with those who truly care for us, our happiness and confidence grow, giving us the strength to pursue our dreams. So, choose yourself first. Prioritize your mental health, well-being, and the people who matter. Because life is bigger than just meeting deadlines.
