Netraa Dave’s journey from Surat to Hollywood highlights her rise as a gaffer and cinematographer shaping cinematic storytelling.
Netraa Dave
In an industry where storytelling often begins with light, Netraa Dave has emerged as an inspiring figure in Hollywood’s filmmaking community. As a gaffer and cinematographer, she plays a crucial role in shaping the visual language of film, crafting the atmosphere, emotion, and depth that audiences experience on screen. Her journey from the city of Surat in Gujarat, India, to working on film sets in Hollywood reflects not only technical mastery but also determination, resilience, and a passion for cinematic storytelling.
Growing up in Surat, a city internationally known for its diamond markets and thriving textile industry, filmmaking was not the first career path people imagined when they thought of the region. Netraa studied at The One School Goa, India, where she first explored photography and filmmaking. It was during her studies that her fascination with light and cinematography truly ignited. She became captivated by how lighting could define a scene, influence mood, and create depth, transforming ordinary frames into evocative stories. Watching films through this lens, she began experimenting with light, composition, and camera angles, laying the foundation for the career she would eventually pursue on an international stage.
She didn’t just watch movies; she observed them. She noticed how light could transform a character’s face, how shadows could build tension within a scene, and how a carefully composed frame could communicate emotion without a single line of dialogue. At the time, she may not have known the technical language of cinematography, but she instinctively understood the power of visual storytelling. Those early observations quietly planted the seeds for a future in filmmaking.
DISCOVERING THE POWER OF LIGHT
Netraa’s entry into the film industry began not behind the camera, but behind the lights. Starting in the lighting department, she worked her way toward becoming a gaffer or a chief lighting technician; the professional responsible for executing the lighting design of a film. While audiences often focus on actors and directors, lighting is one of the most essential elements of cinematic storytelling. A gaffer shapes how a scene feels. Light defines depth, mood, and atmosphere. It guides the viewer’s eye and subtly influences the emotional tone of every frame.

For Netraa, long days on film sets became an education far beyond any classroom. She learned how to rig lighting systems, control color temperature, sculpt shadows, and solve technical challenges under the pressure of production schedules. Working closely with cinematographers and directors, she began to understand how lighting decisions help define the visual identity of a film. Over time, she realized she didn’t only want to illuminate scenes, she wanted to help shape them visually.
That realization gradually expanded her work into cinematography.
DEFINING MOMENTS AND RECOGNITION
Throughout her career, Netraa has experienced several defining moments that solidified her reputation in the industry. Her work in the film “A Gift of Life” garnered multiple awards including Best cinematography, Best Short Film at prestigious film festivals like Free Wheeling film awards, Robinson Film awards, Switzerland International Film festival. This film also got nominated at the World Film Festival in Cannes. Similarly, her film “Bageecha” was nominated at Indie Short fest, Los Angeles Film Awards and won multiple awards including World Film Festival in Cannes, Indian Independent Film Festival and Ayodhya Film Festival.
The short film “Night Shift” further cemented Netraa’s reputation, winning awards for Best Cinematography at Golden State Film Festival and Accolade Competition. Her contribution to globally successful music videos, such as “Lover” and “Black and White” by Diljit Dosanjh, has added her acclaim, with “Lover” receiving over 196 million views and “Black and White” over 35 million views.

BREAKING BARRIERS AND MOVING FORWARD
Netraa’s journey has not been without challenges. Breaking into technical roles as a woman in a male-dominated industry, adjusting to the pace and scale of Hollywood productions, and constantly adapting to new technologies have tested her resilience. Yet each obstacle strengthened her resolve and sharpened her skills. Looking ahead, she continues to push the boundaries of cinematography and lighting, exploring innovative techniques, mentoring upcoming filmmakers, and striving to create stories that resonate globally. Reflecting on her journey, she says, “My parents worked tirelessly, sacrificing so much to give me the opportunity to follow my dreams. Their hard work gave me the wings to fly, and every challenge I face reminds me of the strength they instilled in me.”
