Dr. Abraham Mathai, Chairman of the Prabhu Yeshu Janmotsav (PYJ), had announced a historic gathering to mark the 60th Diamond Jubilee year of the annual Christmas celebration, which united the city's Christian community in a powerful testament to faith and harmony.

The 'Prabhu Yeshu Janmotsav' had a storied history, having been founded in 1965 by Lady Tara Cherian, the first woman Mayor of Chennai and wife of former Maharashtra Governor P.V. Cherian. For six decades, this annual music festival grew from a humble celebration into Mumbai's largest joint Christmas gathering, consistently promoting a message of divine love, peace, and communal harmony. It was graced by generations of dignitaries, cementing its place as a cherished cultural and spiritual tradition in the city's calendar.

Dr. Abraham Mathai had highlighted that the 'Prabhu Yeshu Janmotsav' celebration which was held at Girgaum Chowpatty on 14th December 2025, brought together an estimated over 30,000 faithful from diverse churches and linguistic backgrounds to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ as one universal body.

"The Diamond Jubilee was a milestone of grace and unity. This celebration transcended parish boundaries to create a sacred space for collective worship and joy, embodying the true spirit of Christmas that brought all people together," Dr. Mathai said.

Dr. Abraham Mathai also former Vice Chairman of the Minorities Commission had announced that the momentous occasion was graced by eminent dignitaries, including His Eminence Cardinal Oswald Gracias, and Honourable Ministers and Shri Ashish Shelar. Their participation underscored a shared commitment to communal harmony and social unity.

The key highlight of the evening was when Cardinal Oswald Gracias beautifully highlighted the truth that Jesus was not just the Prince of Peace, but that He was Peace itself. He was the giver and the gift of peace, offering a peace that surpassed all understanding.

A grand musical celebration featuring Christmas carols was sung in various Indian languages, including Konkani, Marathi, Malayalam, Tamil, Hindi, Punjabi, Gujarati and English which showed the unity of diverse cultures coming together which brought forth national integration. This symphony of voices represented the rich cultural tapestry of India's Christian community.

"This gathering was more than just an event; it was a declaration of the shared faith and brotherhood," Dr. Mathai added. "The presence of such esteemed leaders alongside thousands of devotees at an iconic public venue like Chowpatty sent a resonant message of peace, hope, and divine love that our city and nation cherished."

Christmas celebrates the birth of the king of peace, so let us hold onto that peace and share it with others in a world full of turmoil.
