Amitabh Ashesh’s 'Yun Bhi' showcases poetic, bold paintings at Pune’s Vesavar Gallery, exploring Indian life with a contemporary lens.
Amitabh Ashesh Explicates Yufism
Amitabh Ashesh's striking exhibition 'Yun Bhi' displays forty prototypical paintings exploring unique conceptual territories. They boldly demonstrate mental maps to compose edged art, transforming gallery walls into chapters from a just-published art thesis.
Developed over a decade, the works build upon Amitabh's training at Stanford University's Art department with California stalwarts, including Frank Lobdell, a leader of the Bay Area Figurative movement. The novel compositional principles are organised under the rubric 'Yufism'.

All paintings have original titular poems by a mysterious Bolbul, infusing the visual space with literary air. Words and pictures combine for ethereal fun. Themes are quotidian, featuring ordinary folks and even animals. One notable aspect is the representation of Indian women with uber-contemporary attitudes.
In 'Freely', a young mother strides across the street with her five-year-old school-going son in tow. Her long hair sweeps aerial arcs, and the saree wraps around the torso in a never-before-seen wind, turning it into a futuristic symbol. The woman exudes a self-defining spirit, capturing the zeitgeist.
The feminine spirit suffuses nature as well. In 'Sangam', the evening descends into Dahlia-Town as if a woman clad in a red gown, poetry suggests. The sun sends down rays entangled with dancing plants. In 'Paper Boat Nina', the evening is imagined as a young girl wearing the sky as a dress top and a paper boat carrying the sea as a skirt.
