“The Legend of Break-up Bhavani” is Vinay Kanchan’s fourth book.
Vinay Kanchan
In many ways, it is very different from his extremely well-received, previous three.
“The Madness Starts at 9” took a satirical dig at corporate life. “Lessons from the Playground” was a tome which welcomed the lateral inspiration from sport into the business boardroom. “Sportivity” was a quick ‘airport’ read, that examined ten techniques in creative thinking, emerging from the author’s sporting observations. Wit and humour have always made for the conceptual scaffolding from which Kanchan delivered his eclectic and irreverent insights-common to his books and the multitude of myriad columns he was penned over the years at leading media platforms.
But this book has totally turned up the volume on all those fronts. It has attempted to move from the subtle smile to the full-throated laugh. Because the inbuilt premises are so enticingly fascinating and unique. They juggle between the realistic and the absurd. The everyday and the rare. The grimacing grin and the generous guffaw Born out of an article he penned several years ago at a leading marketing website called “Vacancies for superheroes”, Kanchan, in that piece explored conceptual superheroes who might find everyday relevance. Based on his realization, that while most of those in cape and cowl were busy saving cities, planets and even universes (as portrayed in comics and movies), there was a calling they might heed when it came to the mundane as well. Out of that thought process, and forming a part of that article, was the character of Break-up Bhavani.
Writing those two words down on paper, convinced Kanchan that there was a certain attractive, catchy and euphonious ring, to that nomenclature.
As a brand storyteller and trainer in creativity, Kanchan had always appreciated the unexpected juxtaposition. He felt he had to merge that initial idea with something vastly different, yet eminently relatable for an Indian audience. This is where his interest in the richness of Indian mythology proved to be useful.
So, the world of Break-up Bhavani set out to fuse the influence of two diverse universes-the vivid tapestry of Indian mythology with the vibrantly colourful world of superheroes. Both of which, Kanchan was quite familiar with.
In fact, during his advertising career, he had helped create a character called ‘G-Man’, a superhero powered by Parle-G biscuits. A campaign which was a bit ahead of its time, in the sense that it captured the growing interest in superheroes, before the movie explosion which really kicked that off in India.
The selection of the arena of breakups was due to his observation around how young women typically got a lot more affected by them. Sometimes being completely devastated due to these. And yet, with the passage of time, these events were things they looked back at on with incredulous amusement. As a footballing evangelist, Kanchan used to run a large women’s football group, which put him in contact with many women across several age groups spanning the city of Mumbai. This fed an innate and up-close understanding of their mindsets. The touch of irreverence with which he decided to handle this delicate subject, was something deliberate. He felt this approach had not been attempted before-and was hence very necessary.
Finding the right ally on this journey was absolutely paramount. This is why Kanchan says meeting Suhail Mathur and The Book Bakers-India’s fastest growing and most dynamic literary agency-was such a key milestone in this journey. “I instantly felt there was a meeting of minds and sensibilities. Once I spoke with Suhail, I was convinced I had found the right partner to power this idea ahead. Give it wings so to speak. Superheroes do better when they collaborate, and, quite tellingly, even in this journey, finding the right collaboration really helped things take off”.
“The book is truly like none other. The fact that it can seamlessly blend a variety of sub genres and appeal to all age groups without losing its central thought is highly commendable. It was no surprise then that multiple publishers were interested in signing up this book and after several discussions, both, Vinay & I felt that Locksley Hall Publishing would be the best collaborators and with the response the book is generating, our vision has turned to a glowing reality,” says a proud Suhail Mathur, CEO & Co-Founder of The Book Bakers Literary Agency.
The initial reader reviews have been extremely hugely encouraging with some saying that it “Keeps you laughing and cheering for more” while others have proclaimed it as “A new OTT series in the making”.
This is surely a book that cannot be missed!
