In a historic shift for the Bhiwandi Nizampur City Municipal Corporation (BNCMC), Indian National Congress candidate Tarique Abdul Bari Momin has been elected as the city’s youngest Deputy Mayor at the age of 34. His appointment follows a landslide electoral victory that has effectively reshaped the region's political power structure.
Momin secured a massive 8,688 votes, defeating Sanjay Laxman Mhatre by a staggering lead of 5,231 votes. The victory is being hailed as a "giant-killing" feat, as Sanjay Mhatre is the brother of political heavyweight and former MLA Rupesh Laxman Mhatre. Despite the "Mhatre factor" and the opponent’s history as a two-term Corporator and former Standing Committee Chairman, voters overwhelmingly chose Momin’s progressive vision over traditional family-dominated politics.
A graduate with a B.Sc. in Nautical Science, Momin brings a rare level of technical education to the BNCMC. Supporters believe his academic background will provide a disciplined, modern approach to the city’s infrastructure challenges.
His election as Deputy Mayor was finalized today through the "Bhiwandi Secular Front," a coalition including the Congress and NCP. Under this alliance, Narayan Chaudhary of the Congress has taken charge as Mayor.
Analysts suggest this result sends a clear message: the public’s trust in the Congress party and Momin’s educated leadership has outweighed long-standing family strongholds. With Momin now established as a new powerhouse in the BNCMC, the city enters a new era of youthful, vision-driven governance.
