Mr. Punit Balan: A Philanthropist's Role in Ganeshotsav

As Pune celebrating its most awaited festival of the year, Ganeshotsav, one name that has increasingly become visible across the city is that of businessman and philanthropist Punit Balan. From sponsorship banners on major pandals to cultural initiatives supported by his Group , Punit Balan has in recent years emerged as a prominent patron of the festivals in Pune.

Organisers of several Ganesh mandals say that Balan’s involvement has provided much-needed financial backing at a time when costs of decorations, lighting, and programming have steadily increased. Smaller mandals, in particular, have benefited from structured sponsorships that allow them to present larger celebrations without financial strain.

“Support like this helps us focus on the cultural and devotional aspects of Ganeshotsav,” said an organiser of a central Pune mandal.

Balan’s association with Shreemant Bhausaheb Rangari Ganpati Mandal   recognised as Hindustan's (undivided India ) first public Ganesh mandal, established in 1892  has further strengthened his link with the festival’s origins. The Bhausaheb Rangari Mandal holds historic importance as the starting point of the sarvajanik Ganeshotsav movement, which later gained momentum under Lokmanya Tilak during the freedom struggle.

As Trustee and Head of Festival of the Bhausaheb Rangari mandal, Balan has overseen initiatives that aim to balance modern-day celebrations with the values of discipline, devotion, and community welfare that Bhausaheb Rangari had envisioned more than 134 years ago.

Balan’s visibility in the festival grew notably during the COVID-19 pandemic, when restrictions limited public gatherings. At a time when processions and cultural events were scaled down, his efforts through sponsorships and digital outreach helped ensure that the festival retained its connect with devotees.

Coming from a real estate background, Punit Balan has expanded his ventures into Construction, IT, aviation, sports, and films. Yet, he emphasizes that a significant part of his earnings is directed towards philanthropy through the Indrani Balan Foundation, which supports education, orphanages, and welfare projects across the country, including schools in Kashmir.

For Balan, Ganeshotsav is as much about community service as celebration. “The festival is an opportunity to bring people together and to also give back to society,” he has said in an interactions.

Beyond financial support, Balan has also been vocal about returning festivals to their traditional roots. His efforts to promote DJ-free Dahi Handi and Ganeshotsav celebrations have drawn praise from cultural activists who see this as a step towards reducing noise pollution and restoring devotional atmosphere.

Instead of high-decibel music systems, Balan encourages the use of traditional instruments like dhol-tasha and lezim, creating an environment that is festive yet respectful of cultural ethos.

Alongside his cultural and philanthropic work, Balan has made significant investments in sports and youth development. Through ownership and sponsorship of teams in kho kho, table tennis , Cricket and other sports, he has provided platforms for young athletes to showcase their talent at national and international levels.

He has also supported cultural and educational activities for youth, aiming to inspire the younger generation to stay connected with tradition while embracing modern opportunities. For many, this balance of sportsmanship, entrepreneurship, and cultural responsibility reflects his broader vision for Pune’s future.

While his strong presence across the city has sparked debates about commercialization, others see it as part of the natural evolution of a large public festival. Cultural commentators point out that Lokmanya Tilak had originally envisioned Ganeshotsav as a people’s movement, adapting to the needs of each era.

In that sense, Punit Balan represents a new-age approach blending traditional devotion with modern methods of sponsorship and outreach.

As the festival season begins, Balan’s imprint on Pune’s Ganeshotsav is widely visible. For many organisers, his role signifies a bridge between heritage and contemporary celebration a reminder that the festival remains not only a devotional gathering but also a platform for community, culture, youth empowerment, and social responsibility.
