Shaukat Kaifi was 93 and suffering from old age-related ailments. She was admitted to Mumbai's Kokilaben Dhirubhai hospital but was reportedly discharged a couple of days ago.

The late prominent theatre and film personality Shaukat Kaifi is survived by daughter Shabana Azmi and son Baba Azmi, who is a prominent cinematographer in Hindi films.

Family and friends bid a tearful adieu to veteran actor and Shabana Azmi's mother Shaukat Kaifi as she was laid to rest at a cemetery in suburban Mumbai on Saturday evening.
Shaukat Kaifi, who was in her early 90s, passed away on Friday evening due to cardiac arrest. She was buried at the Sunni Kabristan in Versova suburbs at 4:30 pm, three rows away from her husband Kaifi Azmi, a famous Urdu poet and film lyricist.
Shaukat Kaifi was known for her work in Hindi films such as Umrao Jaan, starring Rekha, Garam Hawa, Salaam Bombay! and Heer Ranjha, among others.
Shaukat Kaifi was last seen in the 2002 romantic drama Saathiya. On November 26, a meeting will be called to celebrate the life of Shaukat Kaifi.

Born in Hyderabad, she married late Urdu poet Kaifi Azmi at a very early age. Shaukat Kaifi along with her husband was among the prominent names in the Indian People's Theatre Association (IPTA).

The 1981 release directed by Muzaffar Ali starring Rekha, Umrao Jaan saw Shaukat Kaifi essaying the role of Khanum Jaan, the madam of a brothel in Lucknow, where Amiran (Rekha) is sold.

Shaukat Kaifi also starred in the National Award-winning film co-written by husband Kaifi Azmi with Shama Zaidi.
Tabu, who is the granddaughter of late Shaukat Kaifi, expressed condolence, as did model-actress Saiyami Kher (who is Shabana Azmi's niece).
Speaking of Shaukat Kaifi's work, The MS Sathyu directorial Garam Hawa had noted actor Balraj Sahni leading as Salim, and Shaukat playing the role of Jamila, Salim's wife. It depicted the struggles of a North Indian Muslim family post-partition in 1947.
