While Asha Bhosle's had impressive music career, she grabbed attention for her troubled married life. At only 16 years old, Asha Bhosle married Ganpatrao Bhosle in 1949, Lata Mangeshkar's assistant. The marriage was against family expectations and created emotional distance. They later parted ways as she accused her in-laws of torturing her.
Asha Bhosle and Ganpatrao Bhosle had three children: Hemant, Varsha and Anand. Despite her professional success, she faced deep personal grief. Her daughter Varsha died by suicide in 2012 at the age of 56. A few years later, in 2015, her son Hemant passed away after battling cancer. These tragedies left a lasting emotional impact on her life.
The singer had an alleged rift with her son, Hemant's second wife, Sajida. For the uninitiated, after some years of their marriage, Sajida filed for divorce in 2010 and accused her husband, Hemant Bhosle, of 'cruelty'. She accused her mother-in-law, Asha Bhosle, of allegedly threatening her to leave her husband's residence. The legal case caused a lot of trouble to Asha Bhosle's public image.
The collaboration between singer Asha Bhosle and music composer OP Nayyar is legendary. Together, they created some of the most memorable songs of Bollywood. Nayyar is often credited with helping Asha Bhosle develop a distinct style.
After long years of professional association, the two parted ways on a rather bitter note in 1972, never to work together again. It has been speculated that Asha was emotionally involved with OP Nayyar.
After her split with Nayyar, Asha married legendary music director-composer R D Burman in 1980. Unfortunately, he passed away on January 4, 1994, at the age of 54. To note, he was 6 years younger to her.
Legendary singer Asha Bhosle interacted with spiritual leader Ravi Shankar and criticised women who thought of childbearing as a burden. Asha Bhosle said, “Nowadays, women think childbearing is a burden. It’s perhaps a reality in the lower strata of society. But even the middle and higher class. I started working as a playback singer at the age of 10. During this time, I had three children, raised them, married them off and now have grandchildren."
Asha Bhosle was also in news for professional differences with sister Lata. It began after Lata Mangeshkar and Mohammed Rafi fought over the topic of 'royalty for singers' back in the '60s. While Lata was in favour of royalty, Rafi was against her suggestion to give royalty to singers. Their fight divided the industry into two camps, and to everyone's surprise, Asha joined Mohammed Rafi.
Asha once set the record straight and dismissed claims stating, "People did carry tales and try to create trouble. I remember, sometimes both of us would be at a function and some industry types would ignore me… Later, didi and I would have a good laugh!”
Shahid Rafi, Mohammed Rafi's had accused Lata Mangeshkar and Asha Bhosle of attempting to undermine his father’s career. He claimed that both sisters were driven by “jealousy and insecurity” at a time when Rafi was widely regarded as the leading male playback singer in Bollywood.
It was back in 2012, when Asha Bhosle and yesteryear actress, Sadhana fought a legal battle over the possession of a garden. For the uninitiated, Asha Bhosle owns a bungalow named Sangeeta in Mumbai, and Sadhana lived there as a tenant. However, after some time, Asha filed a legal complaint against Sadhana for allegedly claiming possession of the large garden.
In July 2025, rumours were rife that the veteran singer has passed away after a picture of her with garland circulated online. However, her son dismissed the claims. However, the singer breathed her last on April 12 at the age of 92.
