Batman Begins (2005)
Starring: Christian Bale, Katie Holmes, Michael Caine
Directed by: Christopheru00a0 Nolan
Worldwide collections: $352,000,000

This is where Chris Nolan sowed the seeds of what became The Dark Knight three years later. Exploring the origins of Batman and telling the story of how he came to be, the Christian Bale starrer won acclaim and made more moolah than its predecessors. Getting an insight into how Bruce Wayne became the caped crusader, the film was edgier and tighter than any other chapters in the series. Getting stalwarts like Michael Caine, Morgan Freeman, Gary Oldman and Liam Neeson was a feat only Nolan could achieve. More of the same please?
Extra: Before Christian Bale, Ashton Kutcher, Jake Gyllenhaal and Hugh Dancy also auditioned for the part

Promos and teaser posters of the film showed Spidey in a dark menacing avtaar. Twisting the tale around director Sam Raimi pushed up the ante as we witnessed the super hero battle his internal devils. Though it was panned critically, the film got the biggest opening for the series and managed to make it to the top 10 list of highest grosser for 2007.

The Dark Knight (2008)
Starring: Heath Ledger, Chrisitian Bale, Aaron Eckhart
Directed by: Christopher Nolan
Worldwide collections: $1,001,921,825

Why so serious? It was the catchphrase of the year. Christopher Nolan's dark gritty and easily the most adult chapter in the Batman series blew everyone's mind away. It was the year when the Joker played by the super talented Heath Ledger overshadowed and triumphed not only at every award ceremony but also won over the hearts of cinegoers world over. Being Ledger's posthumous release, the film was already heavy on anticipation. But The Dark Knight not only rose but also flew over everbodys expectation making it the third highest gross movie of all time.
Extra: Buzz is that the Dark Knight sequel will be entirely shot in IMAX

Worldwide collections: $447,636,280

The sleepover hit of the year came out of nowhere and shook the box-office with its simple plot laced with funny one-liners and a cast that seemed like a bunch of frat boys having fun. The story of four grown up men suffering the worst hangover of their lives in Vegas, waking up to find themselves in a room with a rooster and a tiger, engaged to a hooker and drunk out of their wits had everyone in splits. Made on a low budget, the film sent the cash registers ringing with simple word of mouth.

Based on the ancient feud between the Spartans led by King Leonidas and his battle against the Persians, the film broke new ground with its SFX. High on recall value, the film had guys going back to watch the fight and the girls drooling over the able bodied six packed warriors.
Extra: The success of 300 also saw it being spoofed into a B-grade comedy named Epic movie.
