Undaunted by the controversy generated around Mata, his first film with Jaggesh, director Guruprasad has big plans for Edhelu Manjunatha, a comedy that has Jaggesh and Yajna Shetty in the lead roles. He hopes to release the film in the second week of May.
These are bleak times for everyone. Did you decide on making a comedy to bring back the smiles?
World over, the audience has a soft spot for comedies. But directing a comedy calls for a lot of hard work. It's no joke to make a good comedy.
With a title like Edhelu Manjunatha, what do you want your viewers to wake up to?
I am a great fan of Swami Vivekananda. I am greatly inspired by his historic Chicago address, where he urged youngsters to arise and awake. I wanted to use those lines. My lead character, Manjunatha, is a lazy lout. But he is married to a hardworking girl who sees him through many a crisis.u00a0
Is your character's unwillingness to move a muscle responsible for most of the film being shot in a single room?
(Laughs) Yes, the drama happens inside the room because that's where Manjunatha spends all his time! Technically, it was very hard to shoot in such a confined space.u00a0 Moreover, I haven't used any special props and costumes.
Do we get to experience the Jaggesh brand of in-your-face comedy once more?
So far he has been given roles that demand overacting from him. In my film, he will be his natural self.
