Vijay
A big campaign gathering for Tamil actor-turned-politician Vijay's party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), ended in tragedy on Saturday, September 27, evening, when a sudden crowd rush killed at least 31 people and injured over 50 more. Vijay was photographed arriving at Trichy airport; however, he made no statement about the tragedy.
Vijay made his first public statement about the deadly stampede that occurred during his rally in Karur, expressing his condolences to the victims' families. "My heart is shattered; I am writhing in unbearable, indescribable pain and sorrow that words cannot express," he said in his first statement. "I extend my deepest condolences and sympathies to the families of my dear brothers and sisters who lost their lives in Karur. I pray for the swift recovery of those receiving treatment in the hospital."
Everything that happened in the stampede
A stampede broke out during Vijay's huge rally in Karur on Saturday evening, killing at least 38 people, including eight children and 16 women, and leaving others injured. More than 40 doctors from Tiruchirappalli and Salem have been sent in the area.
Despite police restrictions, tens of thousands of supporters arrived at the venue for Vijay's rally. Vijay arrived at the location about six hours late, escalating the already tense scenario. As he began his speech, the impatient audience rushed toward the stage, smashing past barricades and causing a stampede.
Several workers fell on the spot, leading Vijay to interrupt his speech and throw water bottles from the roof of his custom-built campaign vehicle. The fainted people were taken to local hospitals in ambulances, where several died.
As condolences poured in from all walks of life, Vijay was spotted avoiding the media and departing for Chennai from Tiruchirappalli airport without commenting on the stampede. He did not go to the hospital before leaving Karur and arrived at the Chennai airport shortly after.
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin said that the CM Relief Fund will provide Rs 10 lakh to the victims' families and Rs 1 lakh to those who have been injured and are undergoing treatment. He is also expected to arrive at Karur around midnight to assess the situation.
PM Modi expresses condolences

"The unfortunate incident during a political rally in Karur, Tamil Nadu, is deeply saddening. My thoughts are with the families who have lost their loved ones. Wishing strength to them in this difficult time. Praying for a swift recovery to all those injured," he wrote.
