This weekend, Mumbai has a slightly offbeat option for those who prefer a cerebral workout to spend your leisure time. The Base Camp Board Gaming Library is holding a board game meet-up at their Borivli studio on Saturday for beginners, whether they are aspiring learners, or plain curious to try their hand at something different.

“It’s a structured activity for about four hours, where people have a chance to do something different on the weekend, rather than simply going out to party,” shares Anirudh Shetty, founder of Base Camp Board Gaming. “We wanted to do something interesting on [the northern] side of the city; in Borivli especially; a lot of people have shown interest in learning board games. The session on Saturday will guide a beginner step by step, giving a broad overview of all the games and explaining their mechanics.”

Apart from the quintessential chess, Ludo and Monopoly, there are also jigsaw puzzles, as well as more casual, friendly games and more strategy-based games. Shetty explains, “There’s something for everyone — Wingspan, where one builds a bird reserve; Tycoon: India 1981, a heavy strategy game of industrial houses; Heat, a racing game for F1 lovers, and Blood on the Clocktower, a unique social deduction game. There are also games designed by an Indian designer, Sidhant Chand; these include Chai Garam, where you manage your own chai stall, and Parikrama, which is about solo travel.”

Usually, around 10 people are expected in the studio, he adds, but on occasions they do hold larger gatherings in local cafés or reading rooms for a change. Last weekend, the community even held a board game retreat session at Hideout Farm Stay, located ahead of Palghar. “We want people to develop this as a hobby and create a space to retreat, enjoy and connect, and learn new things,” Shetty signs off.
