While society gradually learns to accept people with disabilities, those with intellectual disabilities are often sidelined, with the general population lacking awareness and proper information regarding their condition.

Yash Charitable Trust (YCT), an organisation founded in 2014 aims to bring about a change in a fun, yet informative way through YCT Fun Fair — a two-day event celebrating neurodiversity, ie unique ways in which a neurodivergent thinks compared to an average person.

The fair, organised for the first time is a step towards promoting inclusivity among the masses, “As an organisation working for persons with intellectual and developmental disabilities, we wish to showcase our work while becoming a voice for the community,” states Ayush Khandelval, Chief Operations Officer (COO) at YCT.

The fair not only provides a glimpse of the neurodivergent community but provides a platform for others to exhibit their creativity and talent, “We want to promote businesses which are owned or run by organisations who either work with Persons with Disabilities (PwD) or small ventures run by PwD and showcase their products,” shares Khandelwal.

An organisation dedicated to building skills and providing employment opportunities to the neurodiverse adults in the Food and Beverage (F&B) sector and bakeries, visitors at the fair can witness the community prepare delicious food at their in-house Café Arpan, enjoy musical, poetry and open mic performances and listen to stories and experiences shared by PwD.

Visitors can also experience the unique world of neurodiversity by engaging in a range of sensory and experiential activities, “The fair will house experience and sensory zones that will give a broad picture of the disabilities and understand how they see, feel and view the world. The sensory activities will let people know what they go through on a daily basis, the distractions they face and how they manage to navigate through them, the COO adds. With this effort to create general awareness about people with intellectual disabilities, here’s hoping that other entities take a cue from YCT to embrace neurodiversity with open arms.
