After being alerted by the beggars, who sit near the Thomas Baptist Church in Vasai, the police recovered the body of a premature baby girl wrapped in a white cloth from the bushes near TB College Colony on Wednesday. According to the Vasai cops, the incident came to light when some of the beggars noticed a couple carrying a package wrapped in a white cloth and going into the bushes. When they walked out, their hands were empty.

"Initially, the couple went into the church. On their way out, the man asked the woman to wait on the road, while he went into the bushes with the package. When he came out, his hands were empty. Later, they escaped from the spot," said a beggar woman, who sits outside the church.

She further said, "When some of us went inside to check, we noticed the package lying under a tree. We immediately alerted the locals and the police, who were shocked to find the body of a newborn girl." Confirming the incident, an officer from Vasai police station said, "The area from where the body was recovered is quite deserted and covered with bushes. The body has been sent to Vasai Government Hospital for post-mortem."

Speaking to mid-day, Anil Mane, senior inspector of Vasai police station, said, "We are checking the CCTV footages of the road near the church from where the couple escaped. A case has been registered against unknown persons under sections 317 (exposure and abandonment of child under twelve years, by parent or person having care of it), 201 (disappearance of evidence) of IPC."
