Sub-Inspector Abbas Ali said Soman, who runs a provision store at Amarakuni village near Pulpally, tried to molest a ten-year-old girl last evening. But she managed to escape and narrated the incident to her mother.

When the news spread in the morning today, the villagers blocked traffic on Pulpally-Sultan Batheri highway demanding that the culprit be arrested. When police were searching for him, Soman escaped into the Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary and shot himself with a country made gun, he said.

The bullet pierced his jaws and he was rushed to the Kozhikode Medical College Hospital, where his condition is stated to be serious, according to the SI. After his discharge from the hospital, the man will be arrested, the SI said, adding, two policemen are keeping him under surveillance.
