In addition, a fine of Rs 10,000 was also imposed on Arun Irkal, who lived at the staff quarters of Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru Udyog Kendra in Yerawada. Irkal was working at the caretaker facility.u00a0

Principal District and Sessions Judge Anant Badar observed that ‘honour of the family and the act of the deceased in bringing disrepute to the family by again eloping with boy from another caste, gave Irkal, a short-tempered man, strong motive to eliminate his daughter, who was 17 years old’.

The victim and the boy were residents of the same building. The girl’s parents had even accused the boy of kidnapping her and filed a police complaint against him following which the boy was then lodged in Yerawada Central Jail. He was released just six months before her murder, after being acquitted in the kidnapping case.

The murder
On December 20, 2002, the girl ran away with the boy but came back home in the evening. This irked Irkal, who in a fit of rage, first thrashed her with a stick and then stabbed her with a pair of scissors.

Irkal was arrested and booked under Section 302 (murder) of the Indian Penal Code. In 2003, he was released on bail after a chargesheet was filed. However, he jumped bail and went into hiding. He was re-arrested from his native place in 2011 following which the trial resumed.u00a0
