The accused, identified as Asim, allegedly established physical relationship with his neighbour in Gokul Nagar area in Gadchiroli after promising to marry her. But later he went back on his promise, police said.

The arrest was made after the 24-year-old woman and her relatives approached Superintendent of Police Sandeep Patil seeking his intervention as police delayed filing an FIR and allegedly misbehaved with her.

In a letter to the SP, the woman alleged that she had filed a complaint against the accused on April 2, but police did not take immediate action.

Instead, they called her to police station the same day and made her sit there from 5 pm to 11.30 pm in the name of conducting inquiry, the woman said in the letter. "My statement was recorded as per the whim of the policemen and not as I told them. In the meantime, policemen passed crass comments and mentally harassed me," she told Patil.

A case under section 376 (rape) of IPC has been registered against the accused, police said.
