The Dindoshi police have arrested a 26-year-old chain snatcher for committing four offences two months back in Malad West and Goregaon East. They tracked him down using a bike he was riding, which was caught on CCTV cameras, officers said.

After arresting Arbaz Atar, 26, a resident of Chakala in Andheri East, on January 22, police also recovered the stolen gold jewellery he had snatched within a month. They zeroed in on the accused after examining footage of all CCTV cameras installed near the crime spots.

Assistant Police Inspector Vijay Jadhav and his team then managed to identify the bike’s registration number and contacted the bike owner. They learnt that the owner had left the bike with a friend and gone to his native place.

“Police found out that the bike owner’s friend was in jail in attempt to murder and extortion cases registered by Aarey and MIDC police. He told us that he had given the bike’s key to his friend,” said an officer.

The friend of the jailed man is a relative of Atar and was also sent to prison last year on the same charges [attempt to murder and extortion]. While he was in jail, Atar took the key and the bike from his home and committed the crimes. Records also revealed that Andheri police had banished Atar from the Andheri area recently.
