In what seems to be a scene right out a movie, an unemployed engineer tried to rob a Nariman Point based bank using a toy gun. The man is said to have entered the bank holding up the gun and threatened people as per reports by the Indian Express.

The fact that he was using a toy gun came to light only after the police arrived at the scene. The incident is said to have occurred at 9.40am and the police arrived at the spot after the branch manager informed the police control room of the incident. Soon enough, a patrolling van reached the spot and arrested the accused – a 35-year-old unemployed engineer.
In a statement to the police, the bank manager said, “We opened the branch at 9.10am, following which the other employees started coming in. At around 9.40am, the accused entered the branch and held the watchman at gunpoint.” The accused then asked everyone to lie on the floor. “The gunman rushed towards the cashier and asked her to give him the money from her teller,” the branch manager added. The accused then asked one of the visitors to close the shutters of the branch.
Senior police inspector Rashmi Jadhav from Cuffe Parade police station said, “We dispatched our nearest patrolling team to the spot immediately after we got the alert. We then got the accused to the police station.”
The accused is a resident of Pune and is believed to have initially misled investigators by saying that he lived in Mulund. As per the police they are yet to verify the man’s claims. An officer said, “Lekhak was jobless since long and didn’t have money to take care of his basic needs and hatched a plan to rob a bank. We have been verifying his claims. When we contacted his parents, they said Lekhak had left the house long ago and had never returned.”
The accused has been booked under sections 393 (attempt to commit robbery) and 342 (punishment for wrongful confinement) of the Indian Penal Code
