A 60-year-old BAMS doctor and five others have been arrested by Vakola police for kidnapping a five-year-old girl and selling her for Rs 6 lakh. The child was rescued from Navi Mumbai. Police said the doctor, Vrinda Chavan, who recently lost her husband and wanted to adopt, paid Rs 6 lakh to the accused Karan Sanas, 25, a cleaner in her society, who helped plan the kidnapping.

The girl lives in Vakola with her mentally unwell mother. Police said the incident took place on November 20 when the child was sleeping in an autorickshaw with her mother, who often slept there despite having a house. The main accused is Lawrence Nicolas Fernandez, uncle of the victim. Others involved in the conspiracy are Lawrence's wife, Mangal, their son Nitin, auto driver Latif Shaikh and Karan Sanas. All are residents of Navi Mumbai

Police said the group kidnapped the child around 1.30 am in Shaikh’s autorickshaw. The mother realised the child was missing but informed the family only the next day due to her mental condition. A missing complaint was then filed. Under DCP Manish Kalwaniya’s supervision, a team scanned around 200 CCTV cameras and identified the autorickshaw by a ‘V’ mark. The driver was traced and admitted that he was paid R6000 for his role. Police later rescued the child from Chavan’s Panvel home. Chavan confessed she paid Rs 6 lakh to Sanas for arranging the child.
