A failed attempt by unidentified thieves to rob an ATM in Thane, Maharashtra, using a gas cutter resulted in a fire, consuming Rs 21 lakh in stored cash, according to police reports on Monday. The event happened early on January 13 at an ATM operated by a nationalised bank in the Dombivali township's Vishnu Nagar neighbourhood, the PTI report stated.

According to the report, between one and two in the morning on January 13, the anonymous offenders broke the shutter lock and forced their way into the ATM kiosk. However, authorities stated that because of the extreme heat produced during the process of using a gas cutter to enter the ATM, they unintentionally started a fire.

Due to extensive internal component damage caused by the fire, the ATM was destroyed and all of the cash that was stored—an estimated Rs 21,11,800—was lost. Based on information provided by the Electronic Payment Systems officer in charge of overseeing the ATM centre, a formal complaint was filed, the report added.

The PTI report stated that the unidentified culprits were booked under sections 457 (Lurking house-trespass or house-breaking by night), 380 (Theft in any building, tent or vessel), and 427 (Committing mischief and thereby causing loss or damage to the amount of fifty rupees or upwards) of the Indian Penal Code. The people who are in charge of the abortive robbery attempt and the ensuing fire are being sought out and apprehended.

Meanwhile, in another incident, in connection with the Sharad Mohol murder case, which is presently being investigated by the Pune crime branch, the Navi Mumbai Police arrested five additional people, including a main suspect. Based on particular information, the culprit was apprehended on Sunday night by the Panvel City Police squad outside a dance establishment in Vashi, Navi Mumbai, close to the Panvel highway. After that, the six people were turned over to the Pune criminal branch, making 14 arrests in all related to this case.

Earlier, during the operation on the Pune-Satara highway, Pune Police had seized firearms and live ammunition and detained eight people, including the key suspect Sahil Polekar (20) and two lawyers. Ramdas Marne, the primary suspect, is thought to be involved in the planning and execution of Sharad Mohol's killing.

On January 5, Sharad Mohol, a well-known individual with a background in kidnapping, attempted murder, and murder cases, was shot close to his home in the Kothrud neighbourhood of Sutardara. Hours later, bullet wounds to his shoulder and chest claimed his life. Following the accused, the Pune Police's crime department learned of their whereabouts in Navi Mumbai, which resulted in the most recent arrests.

The accused were identified and apprehended after a trap was set near the Panvel Highway. Sharad Mohol, a forty-year-old man, rose to prominence after he was found not guilty of killing Mohammad Qateel Siddiqui, an alleged Indian Mujahideen operative, inside Yerawada jail. Associated with history-sheeter Sandip Mohol, Sharad killed Kishor Marne in 2010 to exact revenge for Sandip's death. He then took
