With 3,561 new cases and 89 deaths, the total tally of confirmed cases of the novel Coronavirus crossed the 50,000-mark in India on Thursday, said the Union Health Ministry.
Mumbai's record for the highest number of COVID-19 cases reported in a single day increased to 769 on Wednesday as the total count reached 12,716.
Bracing for more cases in the coming days, the civic body is planning to set up additional COVID-19 care centres in various open spaces across Mumbai. Civic officials said that the new COVID-19 centres will come up at Mahalaxmi Racecourse, Nehru Science Centre, MMRDA grounds in BKC, Mahim Nature Park and NESCO ground in Goregaon.
A 90-year-old woman was discharged from the civil hospital in Maharashtra after recovering from COVID-19, the district administration said. Besides, a seven-month-old boy tested positive for coronavirus in Mira-Bhayander township of Thane district.
Maharashtra BJP leader and former CM of Maharashtra Devendra Fadnavis, on Wednesday visited Saint George Hospital, GT Hospital and Nair Hospital in Mumbai to meet the frontline workers including hospital deans, superintendents, doctors, nurses, and policemen. The wait to return home for thousands of Indians abroad has become slightly longer after the government’s plan to send 64 flights to 12 countries was deferred on Wednesday by 24 to 48 hours.
Multiple government sources confirmed that the delay was because Air India crew are required to undergo COVID-19 tests. As per the original plan, flights from six countries were scheduled to land on May 7, but will now come either on May 8 or 9.
The Union Health Ministry has written to the All India Organisation of Chemists and Druggists saying its member should ensure availability of critical drugs for management of COVID-19 and other essential drugs during these "challenging times".
The Ministry has forwarded a list of 55 drugs for ICU management of novel coronavirus patients and a list of another 96 drugs for general availability and treatment of various co-morbid conditions.

Amid growing cases of COVID-19, Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray said that the state government has asked Indian Army, Navy, Railways, ports and other Central government organisations in the state to provide intensive care unit beds for the patients.
Thackeray also said that the speed of COVID-19 tests in Maharashtra has significantly increased over the last three months.

Two Shramik Special trains carrying more than 2,100 migrant workers left on Tuesday night from Kalyan junction in neighbouring Thane district, the Central Railway (CR) said. One of them, carrying nearly 1,200 migrants, left for Darbhanga in Bihar, a CR release said.
