If a close associate of Ankeet Chavan is to be believed, the Mumbai and Rajasthan Royals left-arm spinner was forced by the bookies to be a part of the spot fixing scandal.
The Delhi Police arrested Chavan along with his RR teammates Ajit Chandila and S Sreesanth on Wednesday night from Mumbai after their Indian Premier League match against Mumbai Indians at the Wankhede Stadium.u00a0
According to Delhi Police, Chavan was promised Rs 60 lakh to concede 13 or more runs in his second over against Mumbai Indians. He eventually gave away 15 runs in that over.
“Ankeet was influenced and forced into doing it. He was also threatened and was repeatedly getting calls from the bookies which he initially avoided,” said a close friend of Chavan.
“He made a mistake by eventually falling into the trap. It was not greed. It was fear,” he added. u00a0Apparently, player-turned-bookie Amit Singh, who is also in police custody, is on Chavan’s BBM list.
“Amit Singh has been his teammate for Ra jasthan Royals and that is when Ankeet added him on his BBM list. So, he has been on his list much before he became a bookie,” the friend said. u00a0Amit played for Rajasthan Royals in four seasons before being dropped this year.u00a0
