The selection of all-rounder George Bailey in the Australian team for the ongoing ODI series against New Zealand has vindicated his inclusion in the Chennai Super Kings squad last year, according to VB Chandrasekar, cricketing manager of the Chennai team.
Chandrasekar said Bailey would provide good cover for Michael Hussey, the Australian middle-order batsman, who will be missing the initial matches in the Indian Premier League Twenty20 tournament commencing this weekend.
Writing in his latest blog, Chandrasekar said he was aware that critics did not consider Super Kings as one of the candidates for the semi-finals, but such a perspective is a "blessing in disguise" for his team.
"In the eyes of the critics who are weighing the strengths of the various clubs, Super Kings start their campaign as underdogs to be in the last four.... This will help the team perform to its potential and certainly comes as a blessing in disguise," he wrote.
Chandrasekar pointed out that the local players in the Chennai Super Kings squad enjoyed considerable success in domestic tournaments and it augured well for the team's chances in the IPL.
Referring to Mahendra Singh Dhoni's captaincy, Chandrasekar said the skipper looked relaxed following an exceptional international season. "The leadership value in him is a resource that the Super Kings will heavily depend on," he said.
