Ian Bell scored his third century against Bangladesh but Tamim Iqbal led a spirited fightback as the Tigers refused to yield on the second day of the second Test here at Old Trafford.

Bangladesh were 96 without loss in reply to England's first innings 419, a deficit of 323, at tea on Saturday and now needed just 124 more runs to avoid the follow-on.

Tamim, who made a dashing century in England's eight-wicket win in the first of this two-Test series at Lord's, completed a fifty off just 43 balls in style by advancing to drive off-spinner Graeme Swann high over long-on for six. At the interval, Tamim was 65 not out - having made five fifties in a row, all against England, in his last five Test innings. Imrul Kayes was unbeaten on 19 as England's attack, including debutant quick Ajmal Shahzad, went wicketless.
